I have killed many of your ogres, Lantresor. which is the core rules.Who so boldly stands before Lantresor of the Blade? Do you not know death by sight, ? (For those interested, I'll talk about the game system in another post when I cover the Shadow Chronicles RPG itself. I continue to be highly impressed by Palladium's new take on Robotech and intend to keep up collecting this New Generation of Robotech source material! but we get nothing.Īll in all, however, these flaws cannot stop the Macross Saga Sourcebook from being a damn good game to play now with a fresh coat of paint. (Oh, and I guess you Southern Cross fans too.) With all three original shows being released in America, it seems like more then in the 80s, we should have seen a page or two of notes for the original shows. Those were really great for people who wanted to run a Super Dimensional Fortress Macross or Genesis Climber Mospeada game instead of Robotech and the loss of that was pretty signifigant in my mind. Still, I wouldn't have left out such a crucial system of the SDF-1 out of the main book.įinally, I am a little disapointed to see that there are no liner notes to the Original Source Material like the original books had. I honestly hope this will be included in their starship feature book. That seems rather important as several episodes FEATURE the darn system. It turns out the SDF-1 stats DON'T include the Pinpoint or Omni-directional barrier of the ship. (Updated edit) Second read-through, I found what I consider a rather glaring omission. There is no good excuse for this in my opinion. I mean, there wasn't even a real timeline of events to really work off of. he's going to have to go searching for this informatioon if he wants to run the game ANYTHING like the series it is based on. While they did a good job laying out plenty of ideas of how to run a Shadow Chronicles campaign, there was barely any information for NEW GMs to run post Zentraedi Holocaust campaigns, famous battles of the RDF, Malcontent Stories or anything. I also think that the book suffers in a poor presentation of the Macross timeline. The way it stands reminds me of how we were promised further information on the Marduk in a forthcoming Macross II sourcebook that never materialized. I would have paid an extra dollar for the book to be the size of the Shadow Chronicles RPG to get that information in the current book. On the negative side: Alot of this book refers to looking up information in their new Starships of Robotech book they plan to publish. Oh gosh, their take on the Zentraedi is spot on this time around! I'm quite impressed. The Macross became the SDF-01 UES (I would imagine that is United Earth Ship) Macross, which just sounds pretty damn cool to me! They also went about fleshing out a lot of the Macross mecha and the Zentraedi. The Lancers became space fighters over the floating turret starships from the original RPG. became equipment that was present only in the SDF-1's Air Wing due to ammunition concerns. The hotly-debated nose lasers (In the Robotech community, mind you.) that appeared in one episode. They also made a few changes to the RPG material that was rather creative. (Which they explain as being a nickname for the force.) The Robotech Masters are an idelogical group within the Tirolians (Properly labeling them by racial name instead of something that sounds like a bad guy line of toys.) An enlisted and officer chain of command, support equipment that you would find on actual aircraft carriers (Trust me, I would know!), ship and mecha designations that are mostly stylized after real aircraft designations, and so forth.Īnd the United Earth Defene Force sounds a LOT better then the Robotech Defense Force. Instead, Palladium rewrote EVERYTHING from scratch and filled it with new artwork and takes on the Robotech universe.įirst and foremost is the redefining of Macross terms in a more standard military/naval style is very refreshing. Palladium Robotech: The Macross Saga Sourcebook for their new line of Robotech RPGs to go along with their Shadow Chronicles RPG isn't just a new printing of the Macross Era book from the 80s. It fits right up there with the "Robotech Masters" as sounding like a line of action figures. One of the things that has always kind of bothered me is the name of the UN Spacy in America, the "Robotech Defense Force". If there is one thing that I really appreciate about the new Robotech RPG line by Palladium Books, its the serious sci-fi tone that Palladium has given the series.
